This striking presentation is brought to you by Olivia Sismey who has researched and written her script based on the life of an eighteenth-century slave girl living in England. It is presented as a monologue in full costume about a young woman bought as a fashionable commodity and largely treated as an exhibit. The story explores the Slave Girl’s desire to be educated and free as her female ‘owner’ starts to come to terms with the brutality of slavery, gradually recognising her own role within it in her own home. The change is slow but does happen as it did indeed in many households in England, ending with the abolition of slavery. Some unusual facts emerge such as how many thousands of British men got on ships to America to fight alongside the North and against the South so that more slaves could be free. It is not until the end of the lecture that her name is revealed, and she has become a free woman with her own identity. It is a story of courage and dignity and poignantly presented by Olivia.
