Skip is an Emmy-nominated and award-winning horror filmmaker, artist, activist, performer and poet. He is also the executive Director of the Shawna Foundation. The Library Poetry Tour was established in 2023 as one of the programs of the Shawna Foundation, evoked from Shawna’s own poetry before her passing in 1999. Shawna’s work will be explored at the readings along with Skip’s work.
He will read from his book of poetry “Catholic (Surviving Abuse & Other Dead End Roads)” published in 2006 by Katherine James Books and features poetry from his one-man theatrical memoir performance of the same name which premiered in New York City at the Bowery Poetry Club in 2005.
Also included in his reading will be the poem “Songs of Mourning” which was read by jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis at the the 2011 remembrance performance of 9/11 at Symphony Space in
New York City which the New York Times said, “Among the evening's most striking performances, the trumpeter Jon Faddis read Skip Shea's poem ‘Songs of Mourning’ and performed his own “War and Peace.”
The poem was later published in the book “Lyrics of Lament: from Tragedy to Transformation” by Nancy C. Lee, Ph.D., who teaches at Elmhurst College where she is Professor of Religious
Studies/Hebrew Bible. She was Founding Director of the Niebuhr Center and its 'Callings for the Common Good' program.
The program is supported in part by the Milford Cultural Council, the Uxbridge Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
