βDon't fool yourself and think all this is art. Okay? And if I'm wrong then you ought to at least realize there's a price to it all.β
SYNOPSIS:
When shy and unassuming student Adam meets passionate and audacious art graduate Evelyn, his life takes an unexpected turn. Under Evelyn's influence, Adam embarks on a journey of self-improvement, pushing the boundaries of who he is and what heβs willing to change. But as he sheds his old self and embraces a new image, the impact ripples through his friendships and sense of identity, raising unsettling questions about authenticity, loyalty, and the cost of desire.
This daring and thought-provoking drama will keep you riveted, questioning what shapes us and what weβll do to be truly seen.
PRODUCTION INFO:
Described as a modern version of Adam's seduction by Eve, The Shape of Things pits gentle, awkward Adam against experienced, flirtatious Evelyn, a graduate student in art. After a chance meeting at a museum, Evelyn and Adam embark on an intense relationship that causes shy and principled Adam to go to extraordinary lengths to improve his appearance and character. LaBute's play is an intense and disturbing study not only of the uses of power within human relationships, but also of the ethics involved in the relationship of art and life.
Neil LaBute is a playwright, screenwriter, and filmmaker. His other works include The Mercy Seat (produced in the Studio Theatre @ SHP in 2018), Fat Pig and Reasons to Be Pretty. The Shape of Things was first presented in London (2001), and became a film starring Paul Rudd and Rachel Weisz.
We're really excited for have Rosie Hill on board as director for this show! Rosie works at Artemis College and has directed multiple productions in the Studio Theatre.
