Description
The Shakespearean Crossdressers Support Group, an original play by Cary Sasso, envisions an afterlife for Shakespeare’s five crossdressing characters: Julia from The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Portia from The Merchant of Venice, Imogen from Cymbeline, Viola from Twelfth Night, and Rosalind from As You Like It. Sometimes speaking in verse and sometimes in prose, these five reimagined characters quip, quote, bicker, break down, and ultimately grow together, grappling with gender, sexuality, transness, rape culture, objectification, womanhood, and what it means to be a crossdresser. Featuring a Claire's-jewelry-wearing Julia, a devilish Portia, an Imogen who's just trying to make everyone get along, a repressed lesbian Viola, and a genderfluid Rosalind, if you were ever the nerdy queer kid who was way too into your high school Shakespeare unit, this show goes out to you.

Director Bio
Cary Sasso (he/him) is a director, playwright, dramaturg, and actor majoring in Theater and Performance Studies at Stanford University. His work focuses on two major sites of inquiry: translating horror and gore to the stage and modernizing Shakespeare, with a particular emphasis on queer and trans perspectives. He previously directed The Shakespearean Crossdressers Support Group in NYC at the American Theater of Actors. He is the co-author and director of Titus Andronicus ...and Zombies!, an original adaptation of Titus Andronicus performed by the Stanford Shakespeare Company. At Stanford, he has appeared in shows such as As You Like It (Rosalind), The Wolves (#00), and Three Sisters (Chebutykin). This winter, he will appear as King Henry IV in Henry IV with the Stanford Shakespeare Company. Later this year, he will direct Hamlet: Prince of Denmark, an adaptation of Hamlet which imagines the titular prince as a ftm transgender teenager.
