About this Event
Understand NYC’s Urban Forests with Scientists at CUNY’s Advanced Science Research Center. These scientists are studying the effects of Climate Change on urban vegetation and natural areas. Featuring activity tables about dendrochronology, photosynthesis and more with scientists doing real-life studies on NY’s forests. Additionally, get a demonstration of our DIY air quality sensors using citizen science in the Community Sensor Lab!
Activities include:
Air Quality Sensor Demonstration with the Community Sensor Lab students:
Join the Community Sensor Lab team for a demonstration on our DIY air quality sensors. Learn about how you can contribute to the understanding of air quality in your neighborhood.
Dendrochronology demo: Have you ever wondered how old some trees are and why some grow faster than others? Scientists at the ASRC are studying tree growth and will show you how to read tree sections to understand their age!
Photosynthesis station: Plants produce oxygen using energy from sunlight, carbon dioxide and water which allows us to breath! Come check out a real time demonstration of photosynthesis to better understand this invisible scientific wonder.
Invasive Species demo: Not all bugs are good for our forests! Learn about invasive species, and see mesocosms with invasive earthworms and spotted lantern flies! Learn about what classifies an invasive species, how they impact forests, and how they can help stop their spread.
