During the month of January 2025, we are excited to partner with the Berkshire Museum to bring you The Science of Color! From January 2 to 30, we will host one of their Mobile Museum Units (MoMUs). MoMUs are art and STEM-curated mini-exhibitions that offer field trip experiences outside the museum walls. The Science of Color MoMU displays several objects from the museum’s collection that present vivid colors found in nature, as well as examples of humans using pigments to color objects. These objects include Egyptian shabtis, glass slags, remarkable agate specimens, and toys designed by the great Alexander Calder.
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 4:00 p.m., educators from the Berkshire Museum will be at the Library to lead a program on the science of color. What do we see when we look at a painting? How did people make paints and dyes in ancient times? From what did they make those colors? The program will conclude with hands-on pigment creation: participants will make a bold red paint from a very unusual ingredient, just as indigenous peoples from the Central Americas did for centuries.
This program is best for children in grades K through 3.
