SCERTS Program Design: Using SCERTS in Action to embed supports within natural activities

This virtual workshop is typically referred to as Day 2 of our 3 day SCERTS course. This course is most relevant for those who have already participated in Day 1, our introduction to SCERTS and would like a deeper understanding of how to design learning environments using SCERTS in Action. Evidence-based educational outcomes in Social Communication and Emotional Regulation will be addressed in a learners’ natural activities using Transactional Supports that are aligned with the developmental needs of learners. Those who are pre-symbolic communicators, those who are at emerging language stages (using speech or multimodal forms of language), and those at conversational levels have unique needs which will be considered.

The day will begin with a discussion of Transactional Supports relevant for whole group settings to enhance active engagement using the SCERTS Observation & Action Planning Form. Next, the content will shift toward developing SC and ER goals as well as a SCERTS Activities Planner for individual learners. This tool provides individuals, multidisciplinary team members, and family with a coordinated plan for providing interpersonal and learning supports that foster an individual's SC and ER.

Please note that this course is live and will start at 9:00am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). Our virtual format is interactive and participants will have the opportunity share ideas, ask questions, and learn from one another throughout the day. A recording of this session will be made available for three weeks following the live event to all paid registrants. The formal SCERTS Assessment Process will be covered in a future virtual training or what is referred to as Day 3 of our 3 day SCERTS course. That training will be held on the 29th of April 2025.

9:00 AM - 10:30 AM EDT - Using the SCERTS Observation & Action Planning Form to design whole-group learning environments focused on active engagement.

10:30 AM – 11:00 AM EDT - Break

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM EDT - Using the SCERTS Observation & Action Planning Form to design whole-group learning environments focused on active engagement at pre-symbolic, emerging language stages, and conversational stages

12:30 PM – 1:30 PM EDT - Lunch

1:30 PM – 3:00 PM EDT - Designing a SCERTS Activities Planning Form for an individual child by determining stage, SC and ER Goals, and embedding TS within natural routines.


We are an approved CA SLP PDP provider (PDP#461). This course is offered for 4.5 PDP hours in the state of CA for all licensed SLPs. If you are not in California and would like to use this course for ASHA maintenance of professional learning, our certificates of attendance can be used to maintain your certification. To ensure that these hours count toward your maintenance of certification, participants should complete their compliance form as instructed on the ASHA website. There are more details on the ASHA website: https://www.asha.org/certification/factdef/. To use our course for this purpose, participants will need to maintain documentation (keep records of your certificate and handouts) in case ASHA requests verification of attendance.
