FLORENCE, Ala. (July 23, 2026) — The Salt & Pepper Roots Music Celebration will present blues artist Jimmy “Duck” Holmes on Thursday, July 23, at The Mane Room at the University of North Alabama. Muscle Shoals blues artist Maxwell Russell will open the show.

Holmes, born in 1947, is widely recognized as the “Keeper of the Bentonia Style Blues Tradition,” a rare North Mississippi blues form associated with Skip James and Jack Owens. He is considered the only living musician with direct ties to players connected to Henry Stuckey, a foundational figure in the style.
Holmes operates the historic Blue Front Café in Bentonia, Mississippi, opened by his family in 1948 and recognized as the state’s oldest continuously operating juke joint.
A 2020 Grammy Award nominee for his album, Cypress Grove, Holmes has released multiple albums, including Bentonia Right Now (2025), and has toured nationally. He has opened for Jason Isbell and The Black Keys.
The event is produced by Russell Gulley for broadcast on Alabama Public Television.
