In 1917, millions of Russian workers and peasants, inspired by the leadership of the Bolshevik Party, ended centuries of brutal tsarist dictatorship and installed a democratic structure based
on representative local councils (soviets) across what had been the Russian empire - in factories, rural villages, and military barracks.
The new government replaced private ownership
of industry and agriculture with democratic decision-making over the economy to meet the needs of the new society.
The social gains of the revolution included women's rights like divorce and abortion on demand, an eight-hour workday, and social services ranging from public laundries to childcare.
A Red Army of workers and peasants defeated the armies of the ousted nobility, landowners, capitalists and their foreign supporters.
But the bloody civil war left the economy in ruins and
the Russian population, as well as the Bolshevik Party, devastated by military casualties, famine, and disease. In that vacuum, a bureaucratic class emerged under Josef Stalin, who took control
over the economy and created what we have come to understand as state capitalism.
