About this Event
This fully illustrated talk illuminates the history of the most important manufacturing complex in British history. Begun by Henry VIII in 1517, the Royal Arsenal became the near monopolistic supplier of England’s and later the United Kingdom’s armaments. By the First World War its 1,100 buildings covered a two square mile site and in 1916 the number of those employed reached over 100,000. The earlier buildings, many of which survive, were designed by the most eminent architects of their day.
The talk will be presented by Ian Bull, a committee member of the Royal Arsenal Woolwich Historical Society, which was formed by the establishments’ staff. He will be joined by Steven Peterson, an acknowledged expert on the great factory. The images, all of which are unpublished, will be drawn from the Arsenal’s vast archive which they both administer.
