The role of One Health Research Collaboration with the Global South

As global challenges such as pandemics, climate change, biodiversity loss and emerging zoonotic diseases increasingly transcend borders, strengthening international research cooperation has become essential for Europe’s resilience and competitiveness. The One Health approach — linking human, animal and environmental health — offers a comprehensive framework to address these interconnected risks while fostering innovation, preparedness and sustainable development.

This event will bring together EU policy-makers, research institutions, international organisations and civil society actors to discuss how the European Union can reinforce the global dimension of its research and innovation policy in support of One Health. Building on current discussions around the future EU Multiannual Financial Framework, FP10, Global Europe and the recent Global Health Resilience Initiative (GHRI), the event will explore how international partnerships — particularly with Low- and Middle-Income Countries — can strengthen global health preparedness and resilience.

Through policy discussions and concrete examples of flagship research collaborations, participants will examine the role of equitable scientific partnerships in addressing zoonotic and vector-borne diseases, climate-health interactions and ecosystem health challenges. The event will also provide an opportunity to discuss future EU priorities and funding instruments supporting One Health research cooperation with the Global South.
