Since its inception, Purdue University has had an herbarium, a collection of dried and annotated biological “plant” material for botanical, mycological, and ecological study. Since 1882, Purdue University has also hosted the Arthur collection (now known as the Arthur Fungarium), a unique assemblage that it is specifically and solely comprised of rust fungi, which are widely known as pathogens of agricultural and wild plants.
For over 140 years, these collections have been accessioned, maintained, and even stolen by prominent members of the Tippecanoe community. Under the directorship of Dr. M. Catherine Aime, the combined collections of the Purdue University Herbaria, continue to be acknowledged as extraordinary aggregations of biological specimens with a fascinating history. Join Dr. D. Rabern Simmons, Curator of Fungi, as he shares the stories of the collectors and collections that have made the Herbaria a feather in the cap of Purdue University and Tippecanoe County.
Sponsored by the National Group.
