The U.S.-China relationship has shifted from a cyclical pattern of retreat/crisis and consolidation/advance, guided by the principles of engagement and assurance, to a prolonged crisis fueled by mutual disillusionment, hostility and deterrence. How did the relationship reach this point? What are the root causes of this crisis? What is the future of Sino-U.S. competition? How can Washington and Beijing stabilize the relationship?
