The Power and the Glory: A Lenten Lecture

Join us for our inaugural Lenten lecture, exploring the uncomfortable relationship between Christianity and empire in the early centuries of the Church. This free lecture will examine four historic encounters between Church and state in late antiquity, depicted by four famous works of art. In looking to the past, we shall ask, “does history offer paradigms for the way the Church can engage with political issues today?”

Our speaker, Simon Couper, is a doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford, whose research focuses on the writings of St Augustine, a 5th century theologian who witnessed the dramatic decline of the Roman Empire.
