Title: The Phenomenological Method with David Suarez

Workshop Description: ‘Phenomenology’ is a way of doing philosophy which calls for a return to phenomena, the ‘things themselves’ as they show up for us in experience. Sartre was persuaded to study phenomenology by a friend who told him, “if you are a phenomenologist, you can talk about this cocktail and make philosophy out of it!” In her autobiography, Beauvoir observes, “Here was just the thing [Sartre] had been longing to achieve for years — to describe objects just as he saw and touched them, and extract philosophy from the process.” In this session, David Suarez will give a brief introduction to the phenomenological method by way of a guided tour through a few examples illustrating how phenomenologists study experience. We will discuss what phenomenologists have to say about visual perception, embodiment, freedom, and value — and how 20th century French existentialism is rooted in phenomenology.

David Suarez is an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, at the Department of Philosophy, University of Toronto.
