Meet the ordinary people who helped shape how the UK responds to the climate crisis.
About this Event

Bournemouth University (BU) is delighted to be hosting a community screening of the BBC‑broadcast documentary The People Vs Climate Change, followed by a panel discussion with experts including the film Executive Producer, Steve Smith. This event will bring together our local community, students, and staff to watch an inspiring film and explore what climate action looks like right here in Dorset.

As Dorset suffers some of its most severe flooding in over a decade due to Storm Chandra in January 2026, climate change has never been more relevant to our community.

More about the film

Originally aired on the BBC, The People Vs Climate Change follows the UK’s first-ever Citizens’ Assembly on climate change, where 108 everyday Brits were asked to help decide how the UK should tackle climate change in a fair way, and reach net zero by 2050. The film captures their personal journeys as they grapple with the science, find their voices, and transform from disengaged citizens into passionate ‘net zero heroes’.

The People Vs Climate Change was co-produced by Picture Zero and Curious Films with support from The BFI Doc Society Climate Story Fund. It was produced in line with BAFTA Albert sustainability standards, the UK’s leading framework for environmentally responsible film and TV production.

Why come along?

To learn is to change. This screening is a chance to watch a thought-provoking film, explore what climate action looks like in your local area, and find out how you – regardless of your background, discipline, or experience – can play an important role in tackling the climate crisis.

Panel Discussion following the screening, featuring:

  • Steve Smith – Executive Producer of The People Vs Climate Change
  • Councillor Andy Hadley - Cabinet Member for Climate Response, Environment and Energy at BCP Council
  • Dr Annie East – Principal Academic in the Media School at Bournemouth University
  • Stuart Lane – Sustainability and Carbon Manager at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust

Before the film:

Join us for a showcase of local organisations and businesses that are taking action for climate change in Dorset, and discover how you can get involved.

Who’s invited?

Everyone! This event is open to the local community, BU staff, and BU students. If you have a friend or colleague who’s ‘climate‑curious’ but not quite convinced, bring them along. Whether you already consider yourself a net zero champion or are exploring the topic for the first time, we can’t wait to welcome you.
