About this Event
The Past, Present and Future of the ROE.
Our speaker John Davies will describe the origins of astronomy in Edinburgh and how the first observatory became 'Royal' before the move to the present site on Blackford Hill. There, since the 1890s,, the ROE has evolved from a small government funded observatory to a major site for the development of both telescopes and more recently advanced instruments which have been deployed in places like Hawaii, Chile and even in outer space. These projects, and the future of the Observatory, which is now host to the UK Astronomy Technology Centre will be reviewed with new giant instruments, and more space missions, already on the table for work in the 2020's and 2030's.
Dr John Davies worked at ROE, and at the British telescopes in Hawaii between 1987 and 2023. He is still involved in documenting the history of the observatory since about 1970.
