The Pages of Our Past: Digitizing New York's Jewish Stories
About this Event
The pages of the Jewish Week tell the remarkable stories of Jewish life in New York and beyond —from major historical moments in America, Israel and around the world, to the people who shaped the community. We are excited to announce that this history – every page of every issue from 1970 to 2020 – has been preserved, digitized, and made accessible for free to the public by the National Library of Israel’s (NLI) Historical Jewish Press archive.
The NLI’s ambitious project, which began more than 20 years ago, seeks to collect and make digitally available newspapers in thirty languages from Jewish communities around the world – from over the last two centuries. Its acquisition of The Jewish Week, described by renowned Brandeis University historian Jonathan Sarna as “the most important American Jewish newspaper of its time,” is widely viewed as a major step in preserving the eternal story of the Jewish people.
Join the National Library of Israel and 70 Faces Media, the parent company of the New York Jewish Week, for an evening celebrating and exploring this milestone.
Go behind the headlines with Gary Rosenblatt, who served as The Jewish Week editor and publisher for more than half of the last five decades, and current New York Jewish Week journalists as they dive into NLI's newly digitized archive, uncover hidden history, and discuss the stories shaping our community today.
