About this Event
The Fan Vault is a peculiar English invention found mostly in Chantry Chapels, South Porches and the occasional grand church. Earliest examples date from 1351. It is a Gothic style form of vault in which the ribs are all of the same curve and spaced equidistantly, resembling a fan. Excellent examples can be found in Gloucester Cathedral, as well as Bath and Tewkesbury Abbey with King’s College Chapel in Cambridge boasting the largest fan vault in the world.
Our Speaker, Professor Peter Salter,is an architectural designer and academic. His professional teaching has included the Architectural Association School of Architecture, University of East London and latterly (now retired) the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University.
