The second lecture in this series turns to the culture of memoria within the Order of Saint John, explored through the setting of St John’s Co-Cathedral.
As the conventual church of the Knights, St John’s offers a unique lens through which to understand how the Order saw itself. This lecture looks at the image and self image of the Knights, shaped by their beliefs, values, and experiences. Through the concept of memoria, we gain insight into how individual knights understood life and death, joy and sorrow, and their place in the world. Just as importantly, it reveals how they wished to be remembered.
Drawing on themes from Memoria as Mirror, the lecture explores how memory, identity, and legacy are expressed in the artistic and cultural fabric of the Co-Cathedral. It offers a deeper understanding of the mindset of the Knights and the enduring messages they left behind.
The lecture will be delivered by Dane Munro, Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta and the University of Primorska in Slovenia. Dr Munro holds two PhDs and has written extensively on the Knights of St John and their legacy. His works include Memento Mori and Memoria as Mirror, both key contributions to the study of St John’s Co-Cathedral and the cultural history of the Order.
