Be it a gentle piano interlude or a glorious orchestral fanfare, no element of filmcraft sets a movie’s tone and identity quite like the musical score. Film music has the power to underline a filmmaker’s narrative ideas, forge our bond to a heroic character, and move us to the point of tears. Join us all year long as we showcase cinema’s iconic composers whose musical talents enrich the images we see on screen and have us humming their unforgettable melodies as we exit the auditorium. The series continues in October with the classic horror film THE OMEN! 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀: princetongardentheatre.org/specials
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: This supernatural horror film, directed by Richard Donner, stars Gregory Peck in the role of an American diplomat. Together with his wife, played by Lee Remick, they adopt a young boy named Damien, who could potentially be the son of Satan. Anchored by strong performances, THE OMEN is an atmospheric and gripping horror film with memorable set pieces and a truly chilling score courtesy of composer Jerry Goldsmith.
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲: Despite a legendary career working on beloved franchises like Star Trek, Rambo, Planet of the Apes, and so much more, Jerry Goldsmith won his only Oscar for composing this frightful score. If he could only win one statuette in his lifetime, though, he certainly could have done worse. THE OMEN is such a success of dread and portent because Goldsmith couples its satanic frights with an aggressive and, at times, overwhelming vocal chorus of truly hellish quality. His featured song ‘Ave Satani,’ which also earned an Oscar nomination, is an appropriately antithetical response to ‘Ave Maria.’ It brings to the demonic child Damien a sense of unrelenting terror, and it establishes the film’s grand stakes as the battle of Heaven and Hell rages on Earth.
