Are you struggling to read old handwriting, but don’t have anyone to turn to for help? Have you become rusty with your palaeographical skills? Do you enjoy word puzzles and deciphering text? Would you like to contribute to improving cataloguing and access to historical materials in the Cathedral Archives?
On the third Thursday of every month, The Old Document Reading Group will work to decipher a 16th-20th century old English document from the Cathedral Archives to collectively prepare a transcription of the text. At the end of each session you will then have the chance to explore other texts, such as those in latin or Old English, as well as ask the group for help with a document you have been working on from elsewhere.
Please note this reading group is not a formal training course, although you will receive help and guidance on how to read handwriting from different eras and in different styles.

Booking information:
- Please contact Ellie Jones, Cathedral Archivist, if you have any questions or would like to book your place.
- There is no charge for this reading group but if you would like to make a contribution towards the ongoing work of the Cathedral Library & Archives, we have a donation box available.
- There will be a maximum of 8 spaces each month.
This reading group is aimed primarily at individuals or pairs of people rather than groups. If you would like to organise something similar for a group of friends, or for a club or society, please get in touch to talk about options.
- This group is intended for adults but would be suitable for those aged 14+ with a keen interest in history (anyone under 18 would need to be accompanied by an adult).

Accessibility notes:
