Douglass - a former slave and one of the most important African American abolitionists - spoke here to large audiences during his anti-slavery tour.
An accompanying exhibition will set the historical context, highlighting Exeter’s energetic abolitionist movement, its international reputation, and the tensions within the campaign - from radical protests against slavery in the USA to debates over women’s role in the movement.
