Join Dylan van Graan and the Hardware Centre Randburg team for a practical training session where the trainee will sharpen his skills into the Art of Hand Sharpening! In this training session, Dylan will introduce the trainee to:Blade flattening
Set primary bevel
Shape secondary bevel
Honing
The training starts with a discussion with a review of blade prep as covered during the Hand Sharpening intro. Options to achieve a flat blade back are discussed and demonstrated with the difference between plane irons and chisels highlighted during the demonstration. Students are shown what to look for during the process and how to assess if the blade is indeed flat.
Students are provided an opportunity to try the techniques discussed under the trainer’s supervision, who will assist the students to recognize each milestone of the process before moving on to the next step.
Next will be to establish the primary bevel and during this stage the trainer will demonstrate how to determine if a primary bevel is at 25º using a protractor and how to set up a bench grinder or a sharpening jig to provide the correct angle using a permanent marker.
After the forming of a primary bevel is discussed and demonstrated the trainer will move on to the shaping of a secondary bevel. This will take place in conjunction with a review of the topics on bevel theory as covered during the introductory course. The trainer will demonstrate the process of shaping the secondary bevel, both freehand as well as with a Veritas honing guide and students will be offered the opportunity to try the techniques themselves.
As a final step the importance of the final honing of the blade to ensure the sharpest possible edge will be discussed and the trainer will demonstrate this step using a leather strop and honing compound. The trainer will cover the advantages of this final step and the equipment involved.
Students will then have the opportunity to try this step for themselves, again freehand or with a honing guide.
As a demonstration of the final result the iron that was sharpened will be set up in a hand plane and a quick demonstration provided as to how the plane is to be set up and students will then be offered the opportunity to use the tool to “feel” how a sharp blade should perform.
If time allows options for troubleshooting unsharp blades can be covered before closing the day’s activities.
