On January 10, the anniversary of the deadliest fire-related tragedy in Milwaukee’s history, join historian and tour guide Cyndi Kramer for a compelling program on the 1983 Newhall House Fire. The Newhall House Fire was a catastrophic hotel fire that struck Milwaukee on January 10, 1883, claiming the lives of at least 70–90 people and ranking among the deadliest hotel disasters in U.S. history. Cyndi will talk about what led up to it and the people who faced the walls of smoke and flame that night.
The talk will take place at the site of the fire which is now home to the Hilton Garden Inn downtown. The Hilton Garden Inn is housed in the historic 1886 Loyalty Building, once the headquarters for Northwestern Mutual Life, and restored to become a hotel in 2012.
