About this Event
Emotions are the result of our brain’s complex network working together which shapes how we feel and interact with the world. However, emotions are uniquely experienced by each individual—what brings joy to one person might frustrate another. Dr Barbara-Anne Robertson will explore the multifaceted nature of emotions and how our emotional state influences our ability to experience them fully. She will also examine the relationship between thoughts and emotions—can we control our emotions through our thoughts, or do our emotions ultimately control us?
Additionally, you’ll discover how the brain processes and integrates experiences to form emotional memories that shape our perceptions of events. We'll discuss the reliability of emotional memory, particularly in high-stakes situations where accuracy is critical. By understanding how emotions are processed in the brain and body, this talk will provide deeper insights into how emotions influence our daily lives.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

Dr Barbara-Anne Robertson is a behavioural neuroscientist that specialises in how sensory information forms episodic memories. Her research focuses on how memories are encoded, stored and re-experienced, with a particular interest in how emotions can affect memory recall. She also focuses on how positive and negative emotions can distort or enhance accurate recall of past events. She has trained UK police detectives on the effects of stress and emotions on memory during interviews. Recently, she has explored the role of visual memory in PTSD, particularly in individuals with Aphantasia, a condition where visual memory is absent.
