Winner of the Best Director prize in the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard sidebar and Morocco’s submission to the Academy last year for Best International Feature (making the shortlist), Asmae El Moudir’s The Mother of All Lies is a personal film exploring the director’s family and upbringing. When helping her parents move out of their home, El Moudir discovers they only have one picture of her as a child, and she suspects that the one picture isn’t even her at all. Working with her father to recreate her childhood home, town, and memories in miniature (calling to mind works seen in Marwencol, Being John Malkovich, and Hereditary, but to entirely different ends), El Moudir compellingly seeks to unravel the mysteries of her childhood and family.
