Join Recreation District #1/Pelican Park for this fascinating, two-part series exploring the science of our Moon and the local masterminds helping us return there.
Part 1: Lunar Science & Mechanics (August 17, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm)
Presented by Stephanie Welch (Instructor of Earth and Space Science at Southeastern Louisiana University since 2010 and Planetarium Coordinator at Pelican Park), this session dives into the dominant theory of the moon's formation, its composition and cycles, and the science behind its phases, eclipses, and tides. The last half hour of the presentation will take place in the portable planetarium.
Part 2: Apollo vs. Artemis & Our Local NASA Connection (August 24, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm)
Retired aerospace engineer Jeff Best (with 30+ years of NASA experience) compares the historic Apollo missions to today's Artemis program. He will also highlight the vital contributions made right in our backyard by friends and neighbors at the Michoud and Stennis NASA centers.
