Az egyik legnagyobb hatású post-punk és gothic rock zenekar, a The Mission május 9-én visszatér Budapestre, hogy katartikus dalaikkal ismét egyesítsék hazai rajongóikat egy varázslatos este erejéig. Ráadásul a zenekar 10 év kihagyás után jövőre új lemezt is ígér, így a klasszikusok mellett várhatóan már a friss dalok szövegeit is énekelhetjük.
A The Mission 1986-ban alakult Leedsben, miután Wayne Hussey és Craig Adams otthagyták a The Sisters of Mercy zenekart. Hozzájuk csatlakozott Simon Hinkler gitáron és Mick Brown dobon, az így összeállt csapat pedig hamar stabil helyet vívott ki magának a posztpunk és goth rock kedvelők körében. Részletgazdag hangzásuk és az atmoszférikus gitárjáték keveredik Hussey érzelmes, kísérteties énekével egy igazán himnikus dalrepertoárt létrehozva.
Első lemezük még az alakulás évében jelent meg God’s Own Medicine címmel, rajta olyan slágerekkel, mint a Wasteland és a Severina, amelyek egyből a reflektorfénybe emelték a zenekart. Az album folytatása, a Led Zeppelines John Paul Jones által producerált Children (1988) tovább erősítette hírnevüket. Dalaikban gyakran a szerelem, a veszteség és az egzisztenciális önvizsgálat témáit járják körül, ezzel pedig népes és hűséges rajongótábort építettek az évek során.
Az 1980-as évek végén és a ’90-es évek elején a zenekar egy rendkívül termékeny időszakát élte: a Carved In Sand kiforrottabb hangzásról tanúskodott, olyan örökzöld slágerekkel, mint a Butterfly On a Wheel vagy a koncertkedvenc Deliverance. Az 1990-es évek közepére azonban belső feszültségek alakultak ki a zenekar tagjai közt, amelyek 1996-ban ideiglenes feloszlásukhoz vezettek.
A kihívások ellenére azonban a The Mission az új évezredben ismét összeállt, kiadott három albumot és lenyomott több sikeres turnésorozatot is, bizonyítva, hogy képesek megújulni, ugyanakkor hűek maradtak a gyökereikhez is. Koncertjeik ma is erőteljesek és szenvedélyesek, gazdag zenei örökségükkel a goth, illetve az alternatív rockra gyakorolt hatásával a The Mission négy évtized után is a zenei világ fontos szereplője.
A zenekar a Covid után is rengeteget turnézott – nálunk több halasztást követően 2023-ban adtak két fergeteges koncertet -, május 9-én pedig visszatérnek Budapestre is, várhatóan már friss lemezük dalaival. One of the most influential post-punk and gothic rock bands, The Mission, will return to Budapest on May 9 for a magical evening, bringing their cathartic songs to Hungarian fans once again. The band are also set to release new music next year after a decade-long break, so the set may well include previews of fresh material alongside the classics.
The Mission formed in Leeds in 1986 after Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams left The Sisters of Mercy. They were joined by guitarist Simon Hinkler and drummer Mick Brown, and the resulting line-up quickly established a strong following among fans of post-punk and gothic rock. Their richly layered sound and atmospheric guitar work are paired with Hussey’s emotional, haunting vocals, creating a catalogue of truly anthemic songs.
Their debut album, God’s Own Medicine, was released in the same year the band formed and featured such hits as “Wasteland” and “Severina”, immediately thrusting the group into the spotlight. Its follow-up, Children (1988), produced by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, further cemented their reputation. Their songs often explore themes of love, loss and existential introspection, earning them a large and devoted fan base over the years.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band enjoyed an especially prolific period. Carved in Sand showcased their increasingly refined sound and included enduring favourites such as “Butterfly on a Wheel” and the live staple “Deliverance”. By the mid-1990s, however, tensions had developed between the band members, leading to their temporary split in 1996.
Despite these challenges, The Mission reunited in the new millennium, released three albums and embarked on several successful tours, proving that they could evolve while remaining true to their roots. Their concerts remain powerful and passionate to this day, and with their rich musical legacy and lasting influence on goth and alternative rock, The Mission remain an important force in music four decades on.
The band have toured extensively since the Covid era and, following several postponements, played two electrifying shows in Hungary in 2023. Now, on May 9, they will return to Budapest, potentially with new material in tow. Tickets go on sale at 11am on September 3 via livenation.hu and funcode.hu.
