In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the coal mines at Wiconisco and Williamstown were among the most productive in the United States, fueling the Industrial Revolution and driving the economy of Northern Dauphin County. From the discovery of anthracite at Bear Gap in 1825 to the closures during the Great Depression, this presentation will trace the rise and fall of the industry - including mine disasters, labor uprisings, economic booms and busts, and the lasting impact on the Lykens Valley.
