THE MIDNIGHT RIDE OF PAUL REVERE As the nation prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the historic battles of Lexington and Concord, join us for our monthly History Happy Hour featuring a multimedia presentation by Tom Putnam about the events of April 19, 1775. Curiously, Revere’s “midnight ride” was not even mentioned in his obituary and it was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, Paul Revere’s Ride, written some 86 years afterwards to inspire Longfellow’s contemporaries to support the abolitionist cause, that turned Revere into the iconic hero we know today.
Tom Putnam is the retired Director of the Concord (MA) Museum. Prior to that, he spent 18 years at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), first as Director of Presidential Libraries and later as Director of Education and Public Programs. Prior to that, he spent more than 15 years at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, ultimately rising to Director, a position in which he served for eight years. During his tenure, the Library launched the nation’s first digital presidential archive and the Kennedy Library Forums were recognized as among the finest speaker series in Boston. He also managed the design and construction of a $30 million building addition project and directed the $2.8 million redesign of the Library’s permanent galleries. Under his watch, the Library’s retained earnings grew from $4 million to $11 million.
