MF Art Of Listening Featuring - Musicians creating a musical conversation on the spot. Getting back to the original love of what draws musicians into music. Trusting the music and musicians to guide and discover what it means to improvise much in the same way we communicate verbally. Drummer extraordinaire Marcus Finnie assembles a unique group of very special artists for this show, comprised of elite session artists or musicians on tour in the Nashville vicinity. Featuring Marcus Finnie, Jeff Coffin, Hamilton Hardin and Scott Mulvahill.
As a Memphis native and Nashville resident, Marcus Finnie has toured the world with Kirk Whalum, Keb’ Mo’, Taj Mahal, Brett Eldredge, Kurt Elling, Charlie Hunter, Lady Antebellum, Larry Carlton, Donna Summer, India Arie, Kurt Elling, Billy Preston, Earl Klugh, Beegie Adair, Dave Koz and many others. Marcus has also recorded with Grammy and Stellar Award nominated and winning artists’ Jacob Whitesides, Kent Lattimore, Ledisi, Andy Mineo, Kirk Whalum, Keb Mo & Taj Mahal, India Arie, Joss Stone, Butch Walker, Charlie Peacock, Michael McDonald, and several others.
Jeff Coffin is a globally celebrated saxophonist, composer, educator, and is recognized for his breathtakingly singable and enigmatic compositions, his searing improvisations, and his very unusual facial hair. He is a member of the legendary Dave Matthews Band, and you may also know him from his 14 year tenure, and 3 GRAMMY® Awards, with the genre-defying Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. In October 2024, Dave Matthews Band will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Jeff will be one of a handful musicians to attain this incredible musical honor! Jeff is also a Yamaha Performing Artist & Clinician, a Boston Sax Shop Ambassador, & a JodyJazz Artist. He teaches improvisation and directs the top combo at the prestigious Vanderbilt University, has written over 10 music books, authored a children’s book, produces, engineers, mixes, draws, and continues to be recognized for his musical passion, his deep commitment to music education, and his tireless dedication to improvisational music. Jeff Coffin’s 2022 GRAMMY® nominated release, Between Dreaming and Joy, was a stunning display of Coffin’s boundless compositional impulse and eclectic sonic arrest, and was released on his own Ear Up Records. With over 23 solo releases (and 45+ overall) on Ear Up Records, Coffin is proud to celebrate, but not get stuck in, his independent label’s first GRAMMY® nominated recording - an impressive feat for the seasoned woodwind player! Check Ear Up Records for all the latest releases.
A Columbus Ohio native, Hamilton Hardin has become an emerging force in today’s music. As a Grammy award winning producer, multi-instrumentalist, composer for big band and orchestra, Hamilton combines vast musical influences in efforts to produce a fresh and relevant sound. In 2004, Hamilton completed a degree in Jazz Studies and Saxophone performance from The Ohio State University. Since then, he’s continued to tour, record, produce, and arrange for artist such as: Kirk Whalum, Yolanda Adams, Patti LaBelle/Gladys Knight, Dave Koz, Fred Hammond, Tyrese, Israel Houghton, Norman Brown, Lalah Hathaway, Mike Phillips, John P. Kee, Lucia Parker, Take 6, Kenny Latimore, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, William McDowell, Ruben Studdard and many others. Hamilton Hardin has released two records: “Just Wanna Say” in 2014, and “Pray” in 2020; and will soon release his newest work “Filled With Wonder” fall of 2024.
For the past decade, singer-songwriter, upright bassist and multi-instrumentalist Scott Mulvahill has left his unique mark on the intersecting worlds of Americana, bluegrass, folk, jazz, rock & roll, and roots music. Already acclaimed for his work alongside icons like Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby, he turns a new page with Himalayas, a versatile solo album that celebrates the full spread of his abilities. Raised in Houston, Mulvahill cut his teeth as a member of Ricky Skaggs’ acclaimed band, Kentucky Thunder. The group toured internationally for five years, backed by the bottom-heavy pulse of Mulvahill's upright bass. Along the way, he also composed music of his own, shining a light on the genre-jumping influences - Paul Simon’s sophisticated pop, James Taylor’s folk, Jaco Pastorius’ innovative jazz, and more - that would eventually inspire the material on his solo debut, Himalayas. His performances as part of Skaggs’ nightly shows laid the brickwork for Mulvahill’s transition from hotshot sideman to compelling frontman.
