Dane Rudhyar (1895-1985) was a groundbreaking French-American Classical composer, writer and painter. Emigrating to North America to make art in a new and vibrant land, Rudhyar wrote avant-garde music in a totally original voice, using complex harmonies and unrestrained, physical rhythms to communicate a powerful human message. When the precise order of Neo-Classicism took over new music in the 1930s, he abandoned composition in favor of writing, and devoted his life to astrology. Heavily influenced by Jungian psychology, he became a pioneer in humanistic astrology, and also took up painting, creating fascinating spiritual abstracts. He returned to composition in the 1960s, inspiring a new generation of experimentalists and seekers. Peter Nelson-King is presenting a selection of his best piano works at the Seattle Theosophical Library in order to bring the two great bodies of Rudhyar’s work together, creating new harmony in a special space. The program features Rudhyar's classic Tetragrams and Granites, as well as his first three Pentagrams in their original published form as Moments.
