Arcadian Opera Brings The Merry Widow to Stowe this Summer
On Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 July 2026 the sumptuous decadence of the Belle Epoque era is coming to the Roxburgh Hall Theatre, Stowe, with a production of Franz Lehar's comedy romance operetta, The Merry Widow.
Performances will begin at 4pm to allow an hour-and-a-half for picnicking during the interval in the environs of the theatre situated within the beautiful Stowe Landscape Gardens.
For those unfamiliar with it, The Merry Widow is a magical tale of money, mayhem and matchmaking in Paris at the turn of the last century. Glamorous and wealthy young widow Hanna Glawari is surrounded by a flattering number of Parisian suitors on her return to Paris. But everything changes when an old friend from Hanna's past enters the ballroom. One of the most popular romantic operettas, The Merry Widow is the perfect blend of comedy acting, dance and unforgettable music.
Arcadian Opera is renowned for bringing imaginative, traditional opera to Stowe using state of the art projections, professional singers in the principal roles, a chorus of talented local singers, and professional orchestras. As is usual for Arcadian Opera, The Merry Widow will be sung in English so as to dispense with distracting subtitles and allow for a more immersive audience experience.
In the event of inclement weather, audience members who have purchased tickets online will be advised by email the morning of the performance if the picnic interval is to be cancelled.
