The Mental Health Series: Navigating the opportunities and perils of social media
About this Event

To mark World Mental Health Day, join CAMH and the University of Toronto for the third event in the Mental Health Series, an annual community conversation about mental health inspired by the late Honourable Michael Wilson P.C., C.C.

Featuring:

• Moderator: Vass Bednar, host of the Globe and Mail’s “Lately” podcast and Executive Director, McMaster University’s Public Policy in Digital Society Program.

• Panelist: Dr. Hayley Hamilton is a Senior Scientist and Co-Director of the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at CAMH. She is also an Associate Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. Her research work focuses primarily on population health and includes the public health monitoring of mental health and addictive behaviours, and the social determinants of health. She leads the CAMH population surveys of youth (Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey) and adults (CAMH Monitor) that provide data on mental health and substance use in Ontario. She has a special interest in how social media may impact young people.

• Panelist: Karleigh Darnay is the Clinical Practice Lead for Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario. She has a background in youth engagement and social work. Through Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO), she provides clinical and implementation leadership for the YWHO model of service delivery and within youth mental health and substance use system design and transformation initiatives. She also provides support to Shkaabe Makwa, the first hospital-based centre in Canada which focuses on the mental health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis by blending contemporary medicine with traditional knowledge.

• Panelist: Brett Caraway is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto where he serves as the director of the Masters of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM) program in the Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI). He is the author of the book Digital Media Economics which provides an introduction to the economics of online social media, streaming services, and smartphones. He has provided testimony to the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics in the House of Commons on the collection of personal data by smartphone producers and platform operators. He is also a regular fixture in Canadian news media, often providing commentary on issues related to online social media and smartphone usage.
