The Meaning of Pentecost: A Call to Unity
Across the Christian tradition, Pentecost is a foundational celebration of the Holy Spirit's unifying power. On the day of the original Pentecost, people from many different nations and backgrounds gathered in Jerusalem. Though they came from diverse cultures and spoke different languages, the Holy Spirit bridged their divides, enabling them to understand one another and form a profound, loving community that cared deeply for one another.
Drawing a parallel to today, we celebrate this same unifying grace across denominational and cultural lines. As followers of Christ, we are called to care for one another, to bear one another's burdens, and to share His love with everyone around us. By setting aside our differences, Somerset First United Methodist Church (SFUMC) and St. Pat's are uniting as one body to celebrate the Holy Spirit and show care for our community.
We warmly invite the entire community to join us! Regardless of your religious affiliation, background, or beliefs, you are welcome to gather with us. We invite everyone to stand together, set aside our differences, and celebrate our shared humanity and unity in a spirit of love, hospitality, and mutual care.
Events for the Day
1. SFUMC Pentecost Potluck Brunch & Service
9:30 AM – Potluck Brunch:
Held in the Fellowship Hall in lieu of our usual 9:00 AM service. The potluck is free and open to all! Folks are welcome to bring a dish, or you can sign up to help with set-up or clean-up, or, if you are pressed for time, we always have PLENTY of food, you are welcome to just come and eat with us, then worship after early brunch! (Note: SFUMC has invited the congregation of St. Patrick Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church of Somerset to join us for our morning potluck. We understand that because of St. Pat’s has worship at 10:30 AM, and FPC is having a picnic immediately after their 11am worship service, they may not be able to attend, but our doors and hearts are open!)

10:45 AM – Worship Service: Join us in the sanctuary.
2. Community Brunch with St. Pat’s
Time: Opens at 12:30 PM

3. "Fleetwood MacBeth" at the Virginia Theatre
Time: 2:30 PM (Final Showing)
Location: Virginia Theatre (Just one door away from the brunch restaurant)
Why We Are Going: St. Pat's and the theatre company have invited the community to this performance. We want to highlight and support our members who have helped bring this production to life—specifically Renate Dopp, who is involved in its production, and Jenny Cleberg, who is actively involved with Flashback Theatre's productions.
Content Warning: We want to be clear that we are promoting this event in support and celebration of our members' artistic efforts, not the content of the play itself. Please be aware that Fleetwood MacBeth contains mature themes, adult language, and scenes that some may find distressing. Viewer discretion is advised.
