About this Event

The Major Works Book Club of Toronto

Join fellow enthusiasts to read and discuss the greatest works of literature. We will explore authors such as Cervantes, Tolstoy, Oscar Wilde, Dante, Hemingway, Bulgakov, and Sartre, among many others, examining their stories, ideas, and timeless explorations of love, passion, and the human experience. We read, we question, we debate—and we discover together.

February Selection: A Farewell to Arms
Set during World War I, Hemingway’s novel follows Frederic Henry, an American ambulance officer in the Italian army, and Catherine Barkley, an English nurse coping with grief. Against the chaos of war, their relationship becomes a fragile refuge—one that tests love, meaning, and resilience in an unpredictable world.

Spare, powerful, and deeply human, A Farewell to Arms is not a story about heroes, but about how ordinary people confront uncertainty, loss, and hope. Nearly a century later, its themes remain as relevant as ever.
