Lisa Sullivan Dunlop’s October show at the Founders Gallery, The Hub on Canal: The Magpie’s Eye
Lisa Sullivan Dunlop’s exhibition The Magpie’s Eye is a celebration of curiosity, memory, and transformation. Like the magpie that inspires her, Dunlop has spent a lifetime collecting treasures from the everyday world—rocks, shells, bones, worn fragments, and forgotten relics. What others might overlook, she gathers with care, guided by what she calls “the magpie’s eye,” a practiced instinct honed through years of artistic observation and collecting.
In her work, these objects find new life. Old drawers and boxes become shrines, holding juxtapositions of the odd, the mysterious, and the beautiful. Each assemblage tells a story born from the dialogue between once-unrelated things, bound together through thoughtful construction and layers of paint. More recently, Dunlop has expanded into found-object sculptures, using natural materials like driftwood to explore a freer, organic form of storytelling.
The Magpie’s Eye invites viewers to see the world differently, through the lens of an artist who finds wonder in the overlooked and meaning in the discarded. Each piece is a reminder that beauty often reveals itself in unexpected places, if only we take the time to look.
Exhibition through October 25
