The Magic of Cyanotype with Hannah Adam - Blue Print with & without Camera

In this workshop, you’ll explore the world of cyanotype with our experienced instructor, . As one of the oldest and most iconic photographic printing processes, cyanotype is celebrated for its distinctive Prussian blue tones and its rich history dating back to the 19th century.

During the workshop, you’ll learn how to create traditional cyanotype prints from film negatives as well as experiment with photograms—unique cameraless images made by placing objects directly onto sensitized paper before exposing them to UV light. Whether you’re working with negatives or found objects, you’ll discover how light, chemistry, and composition come together to create beautifully handcrafted prints.

Photography is all about capturing light, and this workshop will show you just how creative you can get with light, everyday objects, and a bit of chemistry. Whether you’re completely new to photography or an experienced creative looking to explore new techniques, this workshop is a unique and fun way to make beautiful art with your own hands.

• Coating Paper:

Learn how to mix the photosensitive solution and properly apply it to paper. This coating technique is the foundation of creating a successful cyanotype, and our instructors will guide you through the entire process.

• Creating Cyanotypes from Negatives:

We’ll teach you how to create cyanotypes from negatives, capturing detailed images in rich shades of blue. If you don’t have your negatives, don’t worry—Berlin Photo Studio will provide digital negatives from files submitted by participants.

• Exploring Photograms:

Delve into the fascinating world of photograms, a cameraless photography method that produces unique images by placing objects directly onto the coated paper. This is where you can truly let your imagination run wild. From flowers and lace to pebbles and leaves, you’ll use various objects to create intricate and abstract designs. Feel free to bring your own objects from home to make your creations even more personal!

• Photosensitive Solution and Paper:

We will provide all the materials needed to coat the paper, including the photosensitive solution. You’ll learn how to mix it, apply it evenly, and prepare your paper for exposure.

• Objects and Materials for Photograms:

We’ll have a variety of materials available, such as flowers, leaves, lace, and other interesting objects for participants to use. However, we encourage attendees to bring any small items from home that they’d like to use—this personal touch makes each print unique.

• Digital Negatives:

For those who want to work with negatives but don’t have any large-format film, we offer the option to create digital negatives based on them to submit. This is a great way to add a personal touch to your cyanotype prints.

• Hands-on Creativity:

This workshop is all about getting your hands dirty—in the best way possible! You’ll get to mix, coat, and create, experiencing each step of the cyanotype process firsthand.

• Learn by Doing:

Cyanotype printing is a tactile, hands-on way to explore photography. Our experienced instructors will provide guidance, but you’ll be doing the work—learning as you go, experimenting, and creating your prints from start to finish.

Hannah Adam is a Berlin-based artist working with analogue photography and alternative photographic processes, with a special focus on cyanotype. Through her Instagram account, she shares her experiments with sunlight, chemistry, and handmade image-making, exploring the connection between photography, nature, and personal stories.

After discovering cyanotype, Hannah became fascinated by the unique character of this historic printing process — the unpredictability, the deep blue tones, and the intimate relationship between image, material, and light. Her work combines photographs, found objects, and experimental techniques to create tactile prints that often feel somewhere between photography and painting.

Alongside her artistic practice, Hannah hosts cyanotype workshops in Berlin, sharing her passion for analogue processes and encouraging others to explore the magic of creating images by hand.
