Managing Civil Emergencies in the Age of Misinformation and Disinformation
Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Dr Derrick Anderson CBE draws on his extensive experience in local government and crisis management to explore the critical challenges of managing emergencies in today’s digital age. In this impactful talk, Dr Anderson addresses how misinformation and disinformation can disrupt crisis response, and highlights the importance of clear communication, trust-building, and strategic leadership in safeguarding public confidence. Learn from his real-world insights into navigating the complexities of modern crisis management in an era where information – both true and false – spreads rapidly.
Keith Shayyam-Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Centre of Excellence, will also be joining the Lord Lieutenant to speak about this important subject.
The event comences at 1700 with a networking reception and the speakers will commence at 1730. Parking is available at the North East Car Park (a map will be sent to attendees once registered). Please note that charges do apply.
The Lord Lieutenant's Biography
Derrick Anderson CBE was appointed by His Majesty The King to be His representative in the West Midlands with effect from 5th August 2024.
In his working life Derrick was Chief Executive Officer of Wolverhampton Council and subsequently Lambeth Council, retiring in 2014. Since then he has devoted his time to a wide range of roles and is currently a director of Wave Trust, Patron of Association of Dance of the African Diaspora and a Non-Executive Director of UK Municipal Bond Agency PLC and a Trustee of Our Futures charity.
Derrick was heavily involved with the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as a Non-Executive Director and subsequently became a founding Trustee of the Commonwealth Games Legacy Trust 2022.
Awarded a CBE in 2003 for Services to Local Government, Derrick has also been recognised with Honorary Doctorates from Birmingham University (Services to Local Government) and Staffordshire University (in recognition of work on social inclusion and cultural policy).
