Born in 1825 in Vienna, Strauss was known as “The Waltz King.” He grew up learning violin in secret and eventually formed his own dance band, later inheriting his father’s orchestra. He became famous for his exuberant Viennese waltzes and polkas, infusing them with bright melodies, graceful rhythms, and irresistible energy. Among his most beloved works are “The Blue Danube,” “Artist’s Life,” and many others — though his dance music belies a real mastery of orchestration, melody, and musical effect.
𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐳 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐫
Born in 1878, Schreker studied at the Vienna Conservatory and built a career as composer, conductor, librettist, and teacher. His oeuvre spans operas, orchestral music, and choral works. He developed a distinctive style marked by rich timbral colors, inventive orchestration, chromatic and polytonal harmonies, and a kind of late–Romantic/early-Modern sensibility that blends Romanticism, Impressionism, Expressionism and more. His Kammersymphonie, composed in 1916, condenses traditional symphonic form into one continuous movement — creating a compact but emotionally and sonically powerful piece that reflects the complexity and expressive potential of early-20th-century music.
