Join us in the meeting room down the hall from the Museum for a presentation by local author Lynn Pechuekonis. The talk will relate to her most recent book, Among the Mountains: The Lovetts and Their Hill Top House.
The Hill Top House Hotel was for generations a beloved destination for couples and families celebrating special occasions, yet few former guests know its history—that it was founded by African-American power couple Tom and Lavinia Lovett. This talk will highlight the challenges and successes they experienced as operators of a segregated whites-only resort during the first 30 years of the Jim Crow era.
Books will be available to purchase and have signed by the author following the talk.
About the Author:
Lynn Pechuekonis is a West Virginia native, currently residing in scenic Harpers Ferry. Fascinated with the achievements of Black residents there, her first book, Man of Sterling Worth, explores the life of Professor William A. Saunders, the longest serving Black teacher at Storer College. Her latest book is Among the Mountains: The Lovetts and Their Hill Top House, published by the Harpers Ferry Park Association. She also frequently gives talks and tours on Harpers Ferry Black heritage, covering Reconstruction through Civil Rights.
