Kanteena Presents… The Lovely Eggs Secret Weekender.Primed for a secret Lancaster City Centre Location, The Lovely Eggs, as part of their 20th Year Anniversary have got their heads together, rang their mates and pulled in some favours to bring us two nights of musical genius.
Friday brings us a headline set from The Lovely Eggs alongside support from Paddy Steer Thick Richard & DJ Sie Norfolk with another act tbc.
THE LOVELY EGGS
"One of the country's most beloved underground bands. 8/10"- NME
"The Lovely Eggs are one of the most liberatingly honest bands around these days – they sing about whatever they want, however they want to do it"- This is Fake DIY
"Allergies: Single of the Month ***** "Fantastic!" - Artrocker
'They set themselves apart from any other act around, with a thrashing guitar which is reminiscent of the great bands that filled out the early Sub-Pop days.”- City Life
“The Lovely Eggs make a bloody racket, informed by 90's US alt punks like Mudhoney and Hole with the wit of Magnetic Fields and and the manners of Hilda Ogden. What's more they can really nail a proper pop tune.”- The Quietus
"Thrilling, hilarious, heartbreaking, head-scratching, original, weird, satisfying, arse-kicking, dynamite rock n roll. Just brilliant!”- Americana UK
"It's impossible not to let it overpower you, scribble rude words on your face in permanent marker and leave you grinning like a twat"- Drowned in Sound
“Fantastic. Imaginative, compactly anthemic, and a tad ludicrous. Frankly, this much fun is only to be encouraged.”- The Fly
PADDY STEER
Paddy Steer is a Zelig-like character along the timeline of Manchester’s musical activity. It’s a testament to his musicality that he has played with such a wide range of music and artists over the years, be it as a bass player, drummer, Hawaiian guitarist etc. or all these roles at the same time.
In rejection of the notion of ‘immaculate reproduction’, live performances from Paddy’s own project err more daringly and admirably on the frontier of chaotic abstraction, expression and focussed blunder, dice rolling down the hill in case of duende, as from behind his stacked array of instruments, the anarchically intrepid punk gargles through a vocoder with his xylophone, all a-clatter under disco lights and doilies.
THICK RICHARD
Thick Richard has been pedalling his potty-mouthed poems at festivals and clubs up and down the land for the last 16 years. His cynical, lyrical, jet-black humour, intelligent wordplay, well-crafted verse, and occasionally acerbic, well-targeted comic attacks have earned him much respect from artists and audiences from Edinburgh to Glastonbury. Occasional support for Kate Tempest, Thick Richard was also presenter of BBC 6 Music’s Beat of the Day. A regular headliner of Hammer and Tongue nationwide poetry tours and is usually to be found performing a wide variety of live music and cabaret venues.
SATURDAY // WEEKEND TICKET AVAILABLE
Saturday brings Jane Weaver to Lancaster for the very first time with special invitations to play accepted by Dean McPhee & dull, with one more act tbc.
JANE WEAVER
20 years of whimsical pop trends, Jane Weaver’s experience as a truly independent and resilient songwriter and sound-carrier commands respect and inspiration in equal measures.
Recalibrating her singular journey in the British musical landscape with her most open-hearted, direct and intimate collection of material yet. Jane's new album 'Love In Constant Spectacle' evokes spectacular imagery and distills the artists’ vision in its purest form, elevating her inimitable sound and poetic vision to new heights.
Recapturing the melancholy of her early work whilst propelling it forward, she sketches scenes as we watch new colours, shapes and languages emerge and fill the frame. Love In Constant Spectacle sees her take measured steps towards a vivid, dreamlike record, that offers resolve in the face of life’s inevitability.
The foundations of Weaver’s sound are still evident – lush motorik drums, pulsating bass, custom modded synths and exotic fuzz pedals – but the stream is awash with scrabble piece poetry and Letraset lullabies leading to lush escapism, the free abandon that you’d associate with free jazz and the avant-garde. But, as determined and visionary as Weaver might be, Love In Constant Spectacle wasn’t executed without assistance. Here we find a long mooted unison with Jane’s first ever producer, John Parish (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding), who has shared Weaver’s process in the surrounds of Rockfield Studios and Geoff Barrow’s Invada studio.
DEAN MCPHEE
“Alien presences, spaced-out minimalism and celestial English guitar…an album tied together by the haunted and the alien, and rich with a welcoming abstraction – 8/10″
Uncut Magazine
“Anchored by the thudding pulse generated by a kick drum, the atmospheric, reverb-laden proceedings often channel the slow motion echo chamber ethos of dub reggae or the nocturnal inner space explorations of more cerebral electronic music – 8/10″
Loud & Quiet Magazine
“Achieves a sort of elegantly blackened transcendence: like, roughly, Michael Rother and Bohren & Der Club of Gore enacting a slow-motion ritual in the remotest Pennines – ★★★★”
MOJO Magazine
“There’s really no one else who can create (and sustain) the darkly seductive mood that’s embedded within his work…McPhee’s feeling for dramatic tension ensures that Astral Gold holds your attention from note to note, from beginning to end”
Aquarium Drunkard
