ABOUT THIS MONTH'S LECTURE:
This lecture will give an overview of the American Revolution from the perspective of its so-called “losers”—the Loyalists. Loyalists were Americans in the 1770s who did not want to separate from Britain. Given our nation’s pride in the fact that the Patriot side won the war, it’s easy for us to forget everything that the Loyalists lost in the same event. They were once the neighbors and friends of those self-described “Patriots,” who later turned on them. I will explain how Loyalists suffered ostracization, physical violence, and property loss. They suffered for simply for holding a different political belief than those who illegally put themselves into positions of power. We will explore themes that have resonance today.
