Lorin Benedict’s artistry merges jazz tradition with avant‑garde experimentation, making him one of the Bay Area’s most distinctive and celebrated contemporary vocal improvisers
Benedict, who began his professional career in 2003 after years of listening to recordings and live performances — many featuring family members in the Western classical tradition — has co‑led small groups such as Bleeding Vector with guitarist Eric Vogler, a duo with saxophonist Kasey Knudsen, and the trio The Holly Martins.He has also collaborated with drummer Sam Ospovat, LA musician Logan Kane, and numerous other artists.
His work spans duos, trios, and larger ensembles, often with mutable roles and in contexts ranging from free‑form to highly structured forms lorinbenedict.com. Benedict has appeared on recordings with Steve Coleman and Five Elements (Lucidarium, 2004), Howard Wiley (The Angola Project, 2007; 12 Gates to the City, 2010), John Schott’s Typical Orchestra, and others KQED+1.
Recognized for his unique, non‑traditional scat style — using a syllabic vocabulary that sounds like an unintelligible language yet flows with narrative intent — Benedict has built a global following, bolstered by social media and his day job as a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
