Celebrate 5 years of our Longest Table Baltimore and PM Forni Civility Project as we share a meal and imagine the community we dream of.
About this Event

The Longest Table event is a community gathering where hundreds come together to share a meal at one enormous table. It fosters connections, breaks down barriers, and celebrates diversity, emphasizing the power of unity through food and conversation.

WHY THE LONGEST TABLE:

Pier Massimo (PM) Forni was a notable figure known for his work on civility. He served as a Board Member for the Italian Cultural Center of Maryland for many years until his premature departure.

Forni was particularly famous for his book titled "Choosing Civility," which became a cornerstone in the field of promoting civil behavior and respect in society. The book provided valuable insights and guidelines on how individuals can foster civility in their daily interactions.

The Civility Project at Johns Hopkins University, inspired by Forni's work and teachings, aimed to promote civility in academic and community settings. It served as a platform for research and initiatives dedicated to improving interpersonal relationships, communication, and respect among individuals from various backgrounds.

Since 2015 BIT has hosted Civility Dinners and now, after COVID, we have decided to transition and join the national movement The Longest Table to further PM Forni desire of a community that shares.

In 2017, the Howard County Library System hosted The Longest Table for the first time in Maryland. This event was part of the National Movement to encourage dialogue and understanding among community members.

The Longest Table provided a unique setting where guests could come together to share their experiences and gain a better understanding of how to find common ground, fostering unity in their community. Participants exchanged stories about life in Baltimore City, discussing its past, present, and future.

The primary goal of the event is to enable people to make new connections and engage in conversations about diverse perspectives and common goals, ultimately working towards a more civil and harmonious society.

ABOUT THE BIT CENTER:

A tax-exempt non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, actively contributes to community health and wealth through various programs, including our award-winning Be a Chef for a Day and our social enterprise, B-More Pasta. These cooking classes serve a dual purpose: supporting our youth workforce development program and providing free kids' cooking classes. Embracing the values of the Italian culture, which emphasizes family, community, and delectable cuisine, The BIT Center offers a diverse range of programs and services. Our initiatives aim to foster connections among people through various art forms and promote economic stability. Come and join us for a delightful experience and savor mouthwatering meals at our events held across the city.
