Your Topic:

The Living Skeleton: What It Means to Be Embodied

But what exactly is embodiment? And what does it mean to think of our skeletons as embodied? Many of us will only ever think of our skeletons as static and inorganic. But we don’t just have skeletons inside of us, we are our skeletons. This embodied perspective of our bones opens significant new pathways in osteological, medical, and educational research, reimagining the skeleton as both alive and an active partner in human movement. Dr Rosen invites you to come and meet the bones that make you you, and explore the incredible world of the living human skeleton.

Your Speaker:

Dr Sarah M Rosen is a human osteologist and award-nominated university lecturer who researches the relationships between our bones and our lived experiences. She has held Assistant Professorships at Durham University and Seton Hall University, and is currently a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute. Her work on forensic anthropology, state violence, and embodied teaching has been published by University of Toronto Press, Routledge, Cambridge University Press, Teaching Anthropology, and the Peace Review. In 2025, she moved to Australia and founded The Brains and Bones Project, an educational outreach program that uses embodied teaching to introduce school children to human evolution research.
