About When I Get Homes
When I Get Home is Solange’s deeply immersive 2019 release—a hypnotic, nonlinear love letter to Houston and the interior lives of Black people. Built from layered jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and chopped-and-screwed textures, the album unfolds like a memory rather than a narrative, weaving spoken-word reflections from Black women, ambient interludes, and meditative repetition. Rather than adhering to traditional pop structures, When I Get Home prioritizes feeling, space, and rhythm, exploring themes of Black womanhood, self-definition, rest, and the search for sanctuary. It’s an album about home not just as a place, but as a state of being—communal, protective, and self-authored.
