This is the second lecture of the QM-UNIDROIT ITCL Advisory Board lecture series.
Speaker: Professor Ignacio Tirado, UNIDROIT Secretary General
Topic: “The liquidation of banks and the birth of a new international standard.”
The QM-UNIDROIT Institute for Transnational Commercial Law (ITCL), co-directed by Professor Anna Veneziano and Professor Rosa Lastra, is launching the QM-UNIDROIT Lecture Series coordinated by Dr Kamala Dawar. It will run from mid-October 2025 until December 2026. The aim of the lecture series is to share the wide expertise of the Advisory Board along with the indispensable role of UNIDROIT in the harmonisation of transnational commercial law. The in-person lectures will be followed by a networking opportunity at CCLS to allow for further discussions and interactions.

Ignacio Tirado is Secretary General of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). He is Professor of Commercial, Corporate and Insolvency Law at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid (Spain) on leave. Ignacio has been Senior Legal Consultant at the World Bank’s Financial Sector Practice for almost a decade, having participated in the legal reform projects of over twenty countries. Ignacio was also a consultant on insolvency-related matters to the IMF´s Legal Department and on Private Law matters for the Asian Development Bank. A qualified lawyer, Ignacio was Of Counsel of the Business Restructuring and Insolvency Practice of Hogan Lovells, LLP (Madrid Office, then Lovells LLP), until he joined the World Bank. Ignacio has served as Member of the Executive Committee and as Director of the International Insolvency Institute, where he has also been co-Chair of the Academic Committee. He is the Vice-Chair of the pan-European think tank Conference of European Restructuring and Insolvency Law. He has represented the World Bank in UNCITRAL´s Working Group V (insolvency) and Spain and the III in Working Group VI (secured transactions). A founding member of the Academic Board of the European Banking Institute, Ignacio is International Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. Ignacio is a member of the Spanish Law Commission (Ponencia Especial de la Comisión General de Codificación)
