About this Event
Two decades after Hurricane Katrina changed the Gulf Coast—and the nation—forever, we gather to reflect, reckon, and look forward. "The Lingering Storm: Climate Change, Displacement, and Action" explores how communities such as Houston have not only responded to the challenges of climate change and displacement but also become stronger, more connected, and more determined than ever.
Event Highlights:
- Reporting on Climate Change: Acclaimed journalist Soledad O’Brien (formerly of CNN), Mother Jones’ video correspondent Garrison Hayes, and Capital B’s climate and environment reporter Adam Mahoney reflect on the legacy of Hurricane Katrina and how it reshaped the national conversation around climate reporting. This panel explores how coverage of environmental disasters has evolved since Karina, what challenges persist, and how today’s climate crisis continues to impact vulnerable communities across the United States.
- Starting Over and Building Anew: Hear from inspiring voices who’ve turned loss into leadership. In a roundtable panel, former Houston Mayor Bill White, Hip Hop Caucus’ Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., and local grassroots leaders explore the immediate and long-term challenges the storm brought to Gulf Coast communities such as Houston—and the resilience, leadership, and community-driven efforts that have shaped the path to recovery and renewal.
Together, we’ll honor the past, confront the present, and imagine a more just and resilient future.
